I deserve it.

trying to lose weight, get healthier is the story of my life. It's my life long trial. It's something that I will be working on forever.

Although, I don't want to keep yo-yo'ing through life.

I want to find myself, make peace with who I am, and live life in a healthy manner.

I don't want to do it in vain. I don't want to get skinny and then decide that since I'm skinny I can now eat whatever I want. I've done that before - many times before - thus the reason for my constantly losing and then gaining, etc etc.

I've spent 35 years worrying about my weight. Unhappy. Self Conscious. Too scared to do anything in life because of the way I look.

I'm done with that!

DONE I SAY!

I feel like I need to avenge the younger version of me that has always been so unhappy, so shy, so wanting to be happy. I need to be happy for her, for me. I need her to know that I can be happy if I want to. It's up to me. No one can decide that for me. It's all me.

I need her to know that I make life what it is. If I eat crappy, then I will feel crappy - ashamed - guilty.

Change is here to stay...not come and go.

Happiness is here to stay, because I choose it.

It's amazing how little things will bring about a change like this. It's amazing how doing a few things for myself can help build me up.

Simple things like making sure I wash my face each night before going to bed (taking my make-up off),  doing my hair and make-up in the morning before work, and not just throwing it up in a pony tail, and then doing my make-up at work because I was late. I am making time for myself. I'm making time to do things that are important, because I am important.

I'm eating good because I want to. I'm not doing it as a diet. I'm doing it to be good to me, because I deserve good things.

Sugar makes me un-happy. Like way un-happy. I remember feeling that in 2011 when I got off sugar. Emotionally I felt amazing! Physically...well...it's a given. Felt the best I ever felt.

Sugar gets my emotions all crazy. I'm a crazy woman when I have sugars and refined sugars. Just ask my husband. Poor guy.

So, now it's been a week and a half since I've been off and I feel amazing. Down 5 lbs. yay!

Again, it's not a diet. It's me doing something good for me.

Finding my inner peace, and inner beauty. It's there, I've just locked it up for so many years because I didn't feel that I deserved it. And gosh darn it I DO!

Who's with me??!?!?

starting over

I am a food addict.

I am addicted to the thrill of buying crappy fast food.

I am addicted to spending money on said crappy fast food.

I'm an addict. I come from a family full of addicts - past and present.

I'm an emotional eater.

I'm a closet eater.

I'm a binger.

I'm not a purger.

I'm an emotional wreck.

I'm starting over.

No sugar (white or brown)

No white flour.

No white pasta.

No white potato.

No white rice.

No soda.

A co-worker asked me a few days ago, "why do you think you don't deserve to be happy?"

I thought and thought about that question. I am still thinking about it.

It may need a therapy session or two.

For now...

STARTING OVER.

Feeling better about myself so that I can be happier, and healthier. I never felt better than I did last year when I went off all those items on that list. The first week or so was hard...but man alive I honestly can say I have never felt better, health wise. Because I got rid of the sugar, my emotions became better. I felt happier.

In the last 5 months, I have felt like crap. Soooo done with that.

Last day/5k/4th of July

Today is my last day of work before my sabbatical.

I'm excited. So very excited.

It's raining today - which I love. Love, love, love the rain. We've needed it so badly with all these fires around the state. Hope this helps put out the Alpine fire that started on Tuesday.

Yesterday was the 4th of July. I went to bed at 12:30am and got up at 4:20am to run the Freedom 5k Run in Provo. Darlene, Sharon, Brianna and Sean all signed up - except Darlene had to back out at the last minute. Her and Quinn had other plans. So, Kalin said he would run it with me. And I'm sure glad he did! He was such a good running partner/coach; pushing me to keep going and not stop. We ran that 1st mile in 11+ minutes, a first for me. It was a hard 5k - too many uphills. The last mile was up 900 East...all uphill and ended at Kiwanis park.

It was hard, but it was fun, but it also got me thinking that I may re-consider doing longer races. I think 5k's are good for me for now. Once I can get rid of this extra weight I may look at doing those longer ones. It's just too hard on my body right now.

Here are some pictures from the race...

Hot air balloon that I wanted to see...but had to get going to the race...
A sea of runner in front of us...and even more behind us (didn't get that shot)

Me, Sharon & Kalin stretching before the start.

Me & Kalin...just about to start!

...and we're done! We did it!!!
It was much harder to run this one, than my last 5k. Probably because it was flat, no momentum to push you like running downhill, and the last mile was a hill...a lengthy hill. It was hard. My final time was 47.11
Not the best but I have to be happy with that.
It was only 5 minutes longer than my last one, and again, this one was much harder. But I had fun!
L-R: Me, Brianna, Sean, Kalin, and Sharon.

One of the reasons for running the race was to get this hunk of medal. I love it!

After the race I went home, slept for a few hours, was grouchy to Ryan due to my lack of sleep and just not feeling the best. Poor guy. Lack of sleep does that to me. Don't know how I'm ever going to be a mom. lol!
After my grouchiness wore off a tad we went and saw Spiderman - soo good!

Then it was to the Parentals house for Magelby's French toast with Sugar Free Magelby's syrup.
HOLY YUM!!
Definitely different than our normal bbq, but it was good nontheless. :)

Uncle Ryan (my Ryan) said something funny, so little Ryan (Caiti's 8 year old) said "he's funny, I want to be like him." We didn't realize he meant literally wanted to be like him...lol! So funny that boy!

Hanging out on the front lawn getting ready to start the festivities

I love the 4th. I love my family. I love my Ryan. I love that I only have an hour or so left of work for 6 weeks. I love life. I love the rain today. :)

runnin', runnin' and runnin', runnin'...

This week I've been running with a dear family friend from Hawaii dayz - Heather.  This crazy girl has it in her mind she's going to run a half marathon in September. She's already ran one before...so she can totally do it again.

The funny thing is that she has this crazy notion that I should do it with her! Funny, right? Well...I thought it was funny and totally not do-able. I told Ryan how she wanted me to do this half marathon with her, and train with her... and he said, "why couldn't you run a half marathon?"

Crap!

Don't tell me that! Because then I start thinking that since I have done hard things this is just another hard thing that I CAN do...and that kind of thinking will get me doing crazy things like a half marathon.

Well, I haven't signed up yet...but I am training with her in the mornings. We run on this fabulous trail in Lehi. We follow the Couch to 5k training, with how much we run and walk, but then follow a half marathon training schedule with how far we go. Basically just repeat the C25K over and over until we've completed our miles.

The last couple of days we've been doing 3 1/2 miles. Walking 3 min, running 5 min, walking 3, running 5, etc...

It's been going really well and I feel so happy about it when I'm done. I feel accomplished.

Running is hard, and when you have 70+ extra lbs on you it's even harder.

But I'm doing it and enjoying it.

Now the getting up at 5:15am to go?...not my favorite part.

Recipes

I may have posted these somewhere...but I figure I'll post them again for anyone who would like to try them.

These are my favorite healthy smoothie recipes. You all know that I am a HUGE fan of the blendtec and Vitamix. They blend these smoothies up like no other, and the chopping and cutting fruits/veggies time is down to almost nothing...just toss 'em in.

There are a few things I ALWAYS have in the pantry and in my freezer to make my smoothies...

1.  Frozen Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Bananas. My freezer is stocked with them!
2.  Rolled Oats
3.  Fiber One Cereal, the lovely Rabbit pellet looking kind. I always have a few boxes in the pantry
4.  Blue Diamond Vanilla Almond Milk, Unsweetened.
5.  Vanilla Protein Powder,Vegetable based. (I work for XANGO, and they came out with protein powder with their weightloss line called, Favao. Since I'm an employee I get this with my employee points. Each month I stock up on the Protein Powder. It's so good!)
6.  XANGO juice. Again, because I get it free.
7.  Apples, Asian Pears (when in season),
8.  Big bag of raw Spinach. You can get it from Costco for around $4. It's a HUGE bag.
9.  Flaxseed Oil. Great stuff! I keep it in my fridge and then squirt it in my smoothies. You can get it at Good Earth or other Health Food Stores. Try using it every other day though...it'll clean out your system, if you know what I mean.

This smoothie I have EVERY.SINGLE.MORNING. No joke. I love it! I make this for Ryan and I, and it give us a nice size drink, for each of us...with a little extra if we want more.

Blueberry Graham Spinach Smoothie
-16 to20 oz. Cold water
-2 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder (vegetable base)
-1/4 to 1/2 c. Rolled Oats, raw
-1/4 to 1/2 c. Fiber One Cereal
-3/4 to 1 cup Frozen Blueberries
2 big handfuls of raw spinach
1 Tbsp. Flaxseed oil
6 cubes ice

Blend and enjoy. I use the 'smoothie' mode on the blendtec for this one.

Spinach Smoothie
-12 oz. OJ or use a few oranges. I use XANGO juice
-1/4 c. frozen raspberries
-1/2 c. frozen blueberries
-1/2 banana (I use frozen ones, but they don't have to be frozen)
-2 to 3 large handfuls of spinach (the more the better)
-1 c. Kale (I just take one to two big leaves and cut out the stem)
1.Tbsp flaxseed oil
6 cubes of ice

Blend and enjoy! I use the 'smoothie' mode on this one as well

Strawberry Graham Smoothie
-8oz. Vanilla Almond Milk (unsweetened)
-1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder (vegetable base)
-1/4 c. Fiber One Cereal (same rabbit pellet looking kind)
-1/4 c. Oats
-1/2 c. Frozen Strawberries.
-1 tsp. flaxseed oil
-6 cubes of ice

Blend and enjoy. You can use smoothie mode, or milkshake mode.

We are starting Bountiful Baskets again, yay for summertime! I tend to throw in a few new fruits here and there.

I'll post more, but for now, enjoy! If you make these let me know what you think. :)

Video Diary and Bra tangent...

When I first started my weightloss journey I would do a video diary a few times a week just to talk about how I was feeling, what was working, what wasn't...and also to see my body getting smaller.

Since falling off the wagon, and getting back on now, I feel it's time for my video diaries. This was I can be responsible.

However, you should know that in this video I go off on a little tangent about my bra. You see...today I'm wearing my padded, push-up bra. The bra that gives me cleavage. It's not my favorite bra at all. Why?

1. It gives me cleavage
2. It makes my boobs look much bigger than they are
3. I feel like I look heavier in this bra
4. I don't want the big boobs look, I don't like it on me.
5. Smaller boobs makes me feel smaller all around.
6. When sitting down while wearing this bra, I feel as though my boobs are up at my neck.

I dunna like it, ok? That's why! So, excuse my tangent...but it is kind of random and funny.

*Disclaimer*
Yes, I know I shouldn't have been driving and video recording at the same time. I realize my mistake now. Thanks for pointing it out Caiti. I have no excuse, except that I was on the back roads of Lehi where there are hardly any cars. But, I've learned my lesson. I will not drive and do my videos at the same time.

5k

I posted this whole thing on my personal blog...but thought it definitely needed to be here on my healthy living blog as well. So, if you haven't read it already...here it is.

I'm lying here in bed thinking about this day and how lucky I feel to have a body that allows me to push myself and accomplish a goal. Even a moment ago as I was looking at a picture on fb that Darlene had posted of me, her, Sharon, and Bri having just finished the race, I got teary-eyed. Did we just really do that? Yep, we did.

..................................

I woke up at 6am this morning, after having woke up a few times during the night to see what time it was, and how many more hours i had left to sleep. First 2am, then 5:40am.

I showered, dried my hair a little and pulled it back in a pony tail with a pink ribbon. I then put makeup on - because who doesn't want to look good for a race, right?

I put my running clothes on; my compression capri's (love those things), pink shirt and my compression black jacket. Then came my cute gray and pink striped leg warmer socks, followed by my gym sock and running shoes.

I was ready.

I hurry and made myself a blueberry smoothie for energy, greeted Brea Millward and Violeta Jensen into my home for a little bit before we got Ashley Sorensen and Bri and headed to Pleasant Grove for The Pink Series 5k race.

It was a cold morning. Like really cold. I think it was around 36 degrees.

Ryan so lovingly pulled the car out of the garage, and we hopped in and left by 7:30-ish.

As I was driving I asked if someone could say a prayer for us. Brea volunteered Violeta, and she happily obliged. In her prayer she prayed for us to have strength, determination and courage to finish the race. She also prayed for those who were suffering from cancer, and started to get choked up - then I started to get choked up, and then Brea. It was a beautiful prayer.

Upon arriving and parking on Main Street in PG we walked to the area where everyone was waiting for the shuttle to take them up to the starting point at Grove Creek, up against the mountain. We boarded the school bus, which thankfully had it's heater going full blast.

We got to the area, got loaded off the bus and began stretching a bit while some made their way to the port-a-potties for a pit stop.

It was now 8:20. We still had 40 more minutes before the race and it was cold.

We walked to where the sun met the pavement, and where Sharon gave us some good advice and a pep talk.

"With it being downhill you're automatically going to want to stomp on the pavement while you run...don't do that, you'll be hurting in no time."

"Step lightly on the middle of your feet, not your heels, or toes."

"whatever you do...DON'T GIVE UP! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!"

Excellent advice!! Boy are we lucky to have a runner in the family. Thanks Sharon!

8:45 came and Bri and I had to make a last minute pit stop.

Some photographers were there, and noticed our cool socks and my bright pink scarf/boa thing that I wore. I like to be festive, ok? He said he liked the boa, and needed a really animated picture of us. Of course we were all for it.

8:55 came and the people in charge gave us some last minute words via a bull horn.

9:00: RACE TIME

That first mile, even though the first part of it was down hill, was the hardest. My lungs don't like the cold air and they struggled to give me enough breath. I ran as much as I could but then walked on the uphills.

Towards the end of the first mile I spotted Darlene in front of me, called her name, and caught up with her. Mile 1 was now over. "What? we've already finished mile 1?" I said to her as I caught up. I looked at my ipod, 9:16. It took me 16 minutes to finish that first mile. I felt a little hopeless that I wasn't going to beat my goal of coming in under 45 minutes.

Mile 2 started off downhill. "Let's run all the way down this hill until we get to the end where the road turns and then we'll walk a little," Darlene said. So we did.

My laces were now coming un-done on that hill, but I kept going until the end of said hill where I stopped to tie them.

We then walked a little, and ran more, walked a little, and ran even more. The photographer was there so we put our best face on while he snapped a few of us.

I kept running until mile 2 was over, and even past that. I stopped for a few seconds and realized it hurt worse to walk then it did to run. Wow! That has never happened! So, I kept running, albeit slowly.

We turned a corner and saw a stop sign at the end of the road by the high school. "Let's run to the stop sign and then we'll walk a little," I said to Dar.

We walked for a little bit and realized the end was near, so we ran again....all the way to the end.

We saw my brother Quinn up ahead at the street light, waved to him, and he waved back after realizing it was us. He had his iphone out and took pictures and video of us.

We were really close.

We ran faster.

As we got even closer Sharon came back and ran with us the rest of the way...

"Shannon, you're doing it! You're doing it! Keep going! Ryan is waiting for you!"

She grabbed my arm to try and help me keep going. I was so ready to puke by now. I honestly didn't know if I could make it to the finish line, even though it was so close!

"I'm going to puke, I'm going to puke!"

My face couldn't hide the pain I was feeling in my left foot due to the uneven roads and running on an angle for that last 1/2 mile. I was in pain and I felt like I was going to die.

"You're not going to puke, take deep breathes your almost there! Ryan is waiting for you!" Sharon exclaimed.

I saw Ryan out of the corner of my eye standing there taking pictures of me and with family and friends supporting and cheering for me.

I wanted to cry!!

Even my nephew Owen ran a little with me. But I couldn't look at them, I had to keep looking at that finish line and focus all my energy into finishing.

I could feel my throat starting to close up, as it does when I get choked up. But I couldn't cry or else I really wouldn't be able to breathe...and I needed those last few breathes to get me to the finish line.

"Shannon Hadden - here she comes!" I heard the announcer say in the microphone for all to hear.

I was doing it! I was just about to cross that finish line.

42.35 minutes I saw on the clock as I crossed that line into the arms of Sharon, Darlene, Quinn, Ryan, Sean, Brianna and Ashley.  Now I really wanted to cry!!

"Good job, you did it! You beat your goal!" I could hear them cheering.

But I wasn't celebrating - yet. At this point I couldn't breathe. I struggled to get my breath and really felt as if I was going to pass out. My throat was closing - it was scaring me and I felt nervous for a moment there which made it even harder for me to breathe.

"Relax and hold your arms up, " Quinn so gently said me. Ryan came over to hold me up while I kept struggling to relax and ultimately to breathe.

After a minute or so I finally was able to relax and breathe again.

Now I could really celebrate!

We took some pictures of all of us (minus Ashley - she had to get to work).

4 minutes after I finish I hear them announce Violeta and Brea's name. WOW! They were worried they weren't going to be able to run it at all...but they did...and they made excellent timing.

We finished. All of us. We finished that 5K race.

I am in awe of these awesome Women. I am in awe of the Women who have or had breast cancer. They're strength to keep going is awe-inspiring. I'm proud to have participated in something that has a great cause behind it. Very proud!

It was so cool to see Women from all walks of life participating, cheering each other on - a lot of them breast cancer survivors.

Now, it's time to rest, put my feet up, ice them, take a hot bath, and relax the day away, and check that 5k off my list of goals for the year.

I did it! Will I do it again? Absolutely!

I calculated my pace, and I averaged a 13 minute mile. Not too shabby. After each mile I looked at my ipod to see the time. The first mile was 16 minutes, 2nd was 14 minutes, and the last 1.2 miles was 12 minutes. I'm pleased with that.

Oh, and a HUGE shout out to Sharon for finishing in 23 minutes, and Bri who finished in 30 minutes, and Ashley who finished in...I think it was 34 minutes? And Darlene was just a few seconds before me. Talk about amazing!

-Enjoy the pictures!

Bri and I on the bus heading to the starting point.
